Page 18 of the manual details Memory Channel Groups. Let me summarize here.
The groups are predefined for the memory channels as shown in the first chart. Channels 0-49 are in Group 0, Channels 50-99 are in Group 1 and so on. You have no control over that other than programming channels into the particular channels so that they are in a particular group. Now in the programmer, the channel number is that little blue number to the left of each row. If you want four channels in group 0 program them in to Channels 0-3. Then if you have 4 others you want in Group 1, skip to channel 50 to put the first of these. The radio does not care if there are blanks between the programmed channels. There is nothing else to set up.
Now as for use of the groups... there is no way to segregate usage to isolate the channels in only one group. These are not like other radios that use a bank as a separate group and only that bank.
In the Kenwood radio, the groups are used for quick access to a memory channel, see the explanation in "Recalling a Memory Channel Using Memory Group Function" on page 18 of the manual. There is nothing to set up in the programmer for this as it is a function performed on the face of the radio.
The groups are also used for quickly erasing several channels at once with the function described in "Erasing Memory Channels Using Memory Group Delete Function". This would be accomplished in the programmer by selecting all the channels and using the Clear Channel function (which does not bring subsequent channels up in the list so your other groups remain in place since memory channel numbering is critical to your use of Groups).
There is Group scanning in Memory scanning. This function is described on page 24 of the manual. To scan just one group, use the steps there to engage that function. To scan a number of groups using Memory Group Link function, set up your linking in the programmer under Settings | Memory Linking. Use the check boxes to combine groups that you want included when you scan. Be sure to read the special instructions for this function on page 24 of the manual. The radio may perform differently when this function is engaged.
