First:Getting the initial details from the radio.

Programming the Yaesu FTM-150RASP radio begins in the radio. Not by formatting the card but by doing a Backup of All data to the card. This does two things
  1. It creates the file structure on the SD card needed by the radio and the programmer. and
  2. It collects necessary background information that only the radio can provide (firmware version, worldwide version, modification status)
  3. This information is used by the YPS-M150 programmer to identify this radio for programming. Memory channel details are not important for this part of the process.

This may be your first experience working with the SD card and the data transfer process. These steps will help you through that process.
Step 1: With the radio off, insert the SD card into the slot on the side of the head of the radio.
  • There is only one way the card will fit.
  • Do NOT force it.
  • The slot is on the left side of the face of the radio.
  • The gold "teeth" will be facing you and will go into the radio first.
  • Gently press the card into the slot until it clicks and stays firmly in place.
  • The card will not work if it is not seated properly in the slot and will probably be ruined if you manage to force it into the slot incorrectly.

Step 2: Press and Hold the F[BACK] key until the menu opensFTM-150 Backup Select
Step 3: Rotate the lower [KNOB] (right or left) to menu item 47 BACKUPFTM-150 Backup Select
Step 4: Press the lower RIGHT [KNOB] to select Backup.
It NOTHING happens, the radio does not recognize the SD card.
  • Check that the SD card is seated in the slot properly and completely
  • Check the capacity of the card in use making sure it is within specs for the radio. Generally, the smaller the better with 8-16 GB working best.
  • If necessary, try another card.

Note: You have no control over this filename.

You should make a note of the name as it changes each time you complete this process and you will need to know it later in process.

Second: Introducing the Radio to the Computer via the SD Card
Step 1: Remove the SD Card from the radio.

This is done by pressing the card to release it.

It will pop out a little but a pair of tweezers might be helpful.

Mount the card for use in your computer.

Step 2: Open the YPS-M150 Programmer to a blank file.

If you have been working in the programmer and have frequencies ready to load into the radio, do File | New to get a blank file. This protects your work from what will come from the radio during this process.

Step 3: Click Communications | Read from SD Card from the menu at the top of the screen.

Step 4: Select your file from the box that opens.
  • If this is the first time you have done this process, there will be only one filename in the list.
  • Stated earlier was the necessity to note the filename that the radio writes last. You can see why in the figure. There are lots of filenames on this card and all will work... but only one is what you want to use.

Step 5: The file opens filling the programmer with the information from the radio.
  • If you do not see the information you expected, try a different file.
  • If the programmer does not change, that just indicates that you have not yet programmed your radio.
  • Background data is captured by the programmer during this process. That is done whether anything changes in the programmer or not.

Third: Save File to Computer / Put it back on SD Card for Radio
Step 1: Complete your file with repeater information and other customized settings.
Save your file as you work. This saves the file to the computer.

Step 2: Do Communications | Write to SD Card
This process "translates" the information into a format that the radio can understand.

Step 3: A Dialog opens for you to name this file.
  • Enter a filename of 10 characters or less.
  • The radio can only handle 10 filenames.

Once this process is complete, remove the SD card from the computer and reinstall it in the radio.
