Windows 8 installation - Incompatible Windows version message
Last Updated: 03/11/2013

During installation on some Windows 8 machines, the programmer will report an incompatible Windows version. I emphasize SOME. We are seeing this error very infrequently for all the new Windows 8 machines we are asked about. The correction is to Run setup in Windows 7 compatibility mode. This issue affects only installation and compatibility mode should be used only during installation. The programmer does not need the same correction once installation is complete.

To complete this process.

  1. Access the file explorer in Windows 8. (File Explorer was called Computer...or My Computer... or Windows Explorer depending on which version of Windows) You are welcome to access it any way that is easy for you. This is how we did it.

Put your cursor into the lower left corner of the main Windows 8 screen and right click. When the menu as shown appears. Left click on File Explorer.
  2. Access the CD drive with the installation CD
  3. Right click on Setup. Select Properties from the menu that opens.
  4. Select the Compatibility tab. On that page, click Compatibility Mode. Select Windows 7 from the list that is now active. Click Apply then OK.
  5. Double click on Setup to execute. Complete the installation process.

Remember: Compatibility mode is necessary ONLY for installation. If it is engaged for the programmer once it is installed, the programmer will report an error and not run. The programmer runs just fine on Windows 8.
