If communications fail between the FT-8800 and the computer when attempting to Get data from or Send data to, check that the radio is not in Cross Band Repeat mode.  

To check:  

Look carefully at the face of the radio.  
The indication for MAIN will not be there.  
This will tell you that cross band repeat is on. 

NOTE:  The radio remains in cross band repeat mode even when powered off and back on.
    The radio will not access the start-up menu with cross band repeat mode engaged.

It appears that radio can remain in Cross Band Repeat mode even if the user thinks it has been disengaged.
