First: Getting the initial details from the radio.

Programming the Yaesu FTM-310D/ASP radio begins in the radio. Not by formatting the card but by doing a Backup of All data to the card. This does two things:

  1. It creates the file structure on the SD card needed by the radio and the programmer. and
  2. It collects necessary background information that only the radio can provide (firmware version, worldwide version, modification status). This information is used by the YPS-M310D programmer to identify this radio for programming. Memory channel details are not important for this part of the process although they are included with the data collected from the radio.

This may be your first experience working with the SD card and the data transfer process. These steps will help you through that process.

Step 1: With the radio off, insert the SD card into the slot on the side of the head of the radio.

  • There is only one way the card will fit.
  • Do NOT force it.
  • The slot is on the left side of the face of the radio.
  • The gold "teeth" will be facing you and will go into the radio first.
  • Gently press the card into the slot until it clicks and stays firmly in place.
  • The card will not work if it is not seated properly in the slot and will probably be ruined if you manage to force it into the slot incorrectly.

Step 2: Press and Hold the F[BACK] key until the menu opens

FTM-310D Backup Select

Step 3: Rotate the lower [KNOB] (right or left) to menu item 108 BACKUP

  • Right moves one at the time.
  • Left moves a page at the time.
FTM-310 Backup Select

Step 4: Press the lower RIGHT [KNOB] to select Backup.

If NOTHING happens:

  • The radio does not recognize the SD card.
  • Check that the SD card is seated in the slot properly and completely
  • Check the capacity of the card making sure it is within specs for the radio. Generally, the smaller the better with 8-16 GB working best.
  • If necessary, try another card.

If all is good:

  • The Backup Menu opens with Write TO SD highlighted (selected).
FTM-310 Write To

Step 5: Press the lower RIGHT [KNOB] to select Write to SD.

  • The Write to SD menu opens with the ALL option selected.
  • The ALL selection is what you want to use.
FTM-310 Write to All

Step 6: Press the lower RIGHT [KNOB] to select All.

  • A window opens on the radio to let you know the option was selected.
  • Rotate the lower RIGHT [KNOB] to OK
  • Press the lower RIGHT [KNOB] to start the process.
  • The radio will show ERROR if there are 10 files on the SD card.
  • While the Programmer does not limit the number of files for the SD card, too many can cause problems
when working with this card in the radio.
FTM-310D Write to SD

Step 7: The radio shows SAVING during the process.

  • Do not turn off the radio during the process.
  • Do not try to remove the SD card during the process.
  • The process takes only about a minute. Let the radio finish what it is doing without interruption.

Step 8: The radio reports Completed and the filename when the process is finished.

  • Note: You have no control over this filename.
  • You should make a note of the name as it changes each time you complete this process
  • You will need to know the filename later in the programming process.

Second: Introducing the Radio to the Computer via the SD Card

Step 1: Remove the SD Card from the radio.

  • This is done by pressing the card to release it.
  • It will pop out a little. A pair of tweezers is helpful for getting a grip on it.
  • Do NOT touch the gold contacts of the card.
  • Mount the card for use in your computer.

Step 2: Open the YPS-M310D Programmer.

  • Click File | New from the menu at the top of the screen.
  • This gives you a blank file to work in for this process.
  • Working in a blank file protects any entries you have already make in a programming file.

Step 3: Click Communications | Read from SD Card from the menu at the top of the screen.

YPS-M310D Read from SD

Step 4: Select your file from the box that opens.

  • If this is the first time you have done this process, there will be only one filename in the list.
  • You can see why you need to make a note of or somehow remember the filename that the radio wrote. In the figure, there are several files on this card and all will work... but only one is what you want to use.
  • If the Programmer opens to a directory on your computer other than the SD card:
  • - Either you have not completed the first part of the process in the radio.
    - Or, the SD card is not seated in the computer properly for use.

YPS-M310D Select File to Read

Step 5: The information from the file will open on the screen of the programmer.

  • If you do not see the information you expected, try a different file.
  • If the information on the screen of the Programmer does not change, you may have not yet programmed your radio with memory channel information.
  • What you will not see is the background data that is captured by the Programmer during this process. That is done whether anything changes on the screen of the Programmer or not. This information is crutical for successful radio programming.

Third: Save File to Computer / Put it back on SD Card for Radio

Step 1: Complete your file with repeater information and other customized settings.

  • Save your file to the computer as you work.
  • Remember, this is a computer. You would hate to lose your work should the computer "hiccup".
  • We will "convert" the file for use by the radio later in the process.
YPS-M310D File Save

Step 2: Do Communications | Write to SD Card

  • This process "translates" the information in to a format that the radio can understand.
YPS-M310D Write to SD

Step 3: A Dialog opens for you to name this file.

  • Enter a filename of 12 characters or less.
  • The radio can only handle 10 filenames.

Once this process is complete, remove the SD card from the computer and reinstall it in the radio.

Fourth: Transfer Contents of SD Card to Radio
Step 1: Press and Hold the F[BACK] key until the menu opensFTM-310D Backup Select

Step 2: Rotate the lower [KNOB] (right or left) to menu item 108 BACKUP

  • Check the capacity of the card making sure it is within specs for the radio. Generally, the smaller the better with 8-16 GB working best.
  • If necessary, try another card.

If all is good:

  • The Backup Menu opens with Write TO SD highlighted (selected).
  • Rotate the lower right KNOB to Read From SD

Step 6: The radio shows LOADING during the process.

  • Do not turn off the radio during the process.
  • Do not try to remove the SD card during the process.
